The Fantasticast Episode 24: Fantastic Four #24 & Strange Tales #118

The Fantasticast Episode 24

An Enfant Terrible Is Not Literally A Terrible Infant

No, it really isn't.

Welcome to the twenty-fourth episode of The Fantasticast. This time around, Steve Lacey (20 Minute Longbox) and Andrew Leyland (Heykids Comics) take a look at Fantastic Four #24 (featuring the Infant Terrible) and Strange Tales #118 (featuring the return, again, of the Wizard). To our surprise, both of these issues are better than our admittedly low expectations had led us to believe.

Along the way, we read your emails, talk a bit about the imminent meeting of bodies and minds as we meet for the first time on Saturday at the Thought Bubble convention, and spend a bit of time discussing omnibuses and absolutes.

  • Cover Fantastic Four #23 - The Master Plan of Doctor Doom

  • Cover Strange Tales #117 - The Return of The Eel

  • Read your e-mails

  • Explain social networking for the over-40s

  • Make at least one too many Jimmy Saville jokes

  • Sing

The Fantasticast Episode 22

Going Underground

The twenty-second episode of The Fantasticast is now live and ready for your listening pleasure!

As you can see from the image, there's a huge amount of comics to read this time out. First up is the return of the Mole Man in Fantastic Four #22. Importantly for this blog, this issue also features the first cries of 'It's Clobbering Time!' and the first mention of sweet ol' Aunt Petunia.

Next up is red-hot Thing vs Torch action is Strange Tales #116, which is also the halfway point of our coverage of this series. Then we have another Torch vs Spidey throwdown  in Amazing Spider-Man #8, before finishing off with a brief cameo in The Avengers #3.

As well as all of these, Steve and Andy find enough time to cover a big pile of emails and listener feedback.

The Fantasticast Episode 21

Powered By Hateful Hate From A Hate Raygun!

Joining Steve and Andrew today is the marvellously wonderful and hairy David Wynne, co-creator and artist of Hypergirl, creator of Ideasman, and all-round nice bloke. Oh, he also created the Fantastic-Arse joke, but we forgive him for that. David joins us to look at Fantastic Four #21, featuring the hateful Hate-Monger, Colonel Nick Fury, and a surprise guest-star on the final page. We then move onto Strange Tales #115, featuring the Sandman and... not much else.

We also introduce our new blog, Fantastic Flame On, a daily picture blog chronicling every instance of Flame On, It's Clobberin' Time, Asbestos, and more. Swing by the site to check it out!

David Wynne can be found on twitter (@davidwynne) and tumblr (http://davidwynne.tumblr.com/, or http://bigfootrock.tumblr.com/)

The Fantasticast Episode 20

The (Pre-Emptive) Return Of Captain America (Secret Wars II Continues In This Episode)

Landmark! Record Breaker! We Never Thought You'd Get There! Just some of the comments made about this episode before it was even listened to by human ears!

Steve and Andrew re-unite once more to continue their trek through all things Fantastic. This episode they cover one of the less-good issues of the Fantastic Four, featuring the first appearence of the Molecule Man. They then move on to one of the less-bad issues of Strange Tales, featuring the first modern appearance of Captain America... sort of... Along the way, they tackle listener e-mails, and kill off the Teen Brigade.

The Fantasticast Episode 18

Pharoahs and Plants, Spiders and Soldiers

Welcome to the Eighteenth episode of the Fantasticast, where Andrew and Steve take you through the Fantastic Four from the very beginning. This time around, we have a monster episode with four issues to cover.

In Fantastic Four #19, we meet Rama-Tut/Kang/Immortus for the very first time in a time-travelling romp to Ancient Egypt. Then in Strange Tales #113, Jerry Siegel regales us with the saga of the Plant Man. We then move over to Amazing Spider-Man #5, where Doctor Doom forces the Fantastic Four to make a brief appearance in the narrative, before finishing with an overdue look at Sgt. Fury And His Howling Commandos #3.

Along the way we hear a couple more 'And we're back's', debate the influence of Asterix on Stan and Jack, and discover what happens when Andrew's 's' key stops working.

The Fantasticast Episode 17

No Funny Episode Title Springs To Mind

Damn my alcohol-fueled lack of imagination!

Welcome to the 17th episode of The Fantasticast. This week, Andrew and Stephen take a look at Fantastic Four #18, featuring the first appearance of the Super-Skrull and formulaic plotting. We then dive into Strange Tales #112, where an unexpected guest-scripter takes the series to new heights. Just with lots of words. And a very casual attitude to atomic explosions. Ah well.

Finally we take a brief look at Avengers #1 and the role our favourite family play in the founding of Earth's Mightiest Heroes! It's a pretty packed episode, and it's surprising we fit it all into one-and-a-half hours!

The Fantasticast Episode 16: Fantastic Four Annual #1 & Strange Tales Annual #2

The Fantasticast Episode 16

The Best Of Annuals, The Wost Of Annuals

This is the 16th episode of The Fantasticast, and it's our biggest one yet. Which is appropriate, considering we're looking at the largest amount of story pages yet on the show. To help us out with this massive task, we invited podcaster extraordinaire Jon M. Wilson (New 52 Adventures of Superman, Golden Age Superman, Xavier's Podcast For Gifted Children, The Mighty Shield, Amazing Spider-Man Classics, Teenage Wasteland: An Ultimate Spider-Man Podcast) to sit in with us for the show. And to our great delight, he agreed!

It's time for us to take a look at Fantastic Four Annual #1 and Strange Tales Annual #2. In one, the Marvel universe expands in breadth and depth. The world is invaded, the secret history of Atlantis is revealed, and Jack Kirby hits an artistic peak. In the other, there's a load of gubbins involving The Human Torch and some imposter dressed up as Spider-Man, and Jack Kirby hits an artistic trough.

The Fantasticast Episode 13

The Thinker's Fantastical Predictions

Hello and welcome to a very special episode of The Fantasticast! Not only are we celebrating half a year's worth of the show (we're aiming for 26 a year), but we're also celebrating the birthdays of both Andrew and Stephen, born only 24 hours (and a handful of years) apart. Not that we realised this when recording the show, but I thought I'd put some metaphorical balloons up anyway!

So, this time around, we get to grip with The Mad Thinker and his Awesome Android in Fantastic Four #15. Steve's been going on for weeks how much he dislikes the Thinker, so the contents of this episode may just surprise you. And then it's over to Strange Tales #109 for the threat of the Sorceror and the contents of Pandora's Box. And with a villain called the Sorceror, you just know we've gone overboard with the Hitch-Hiker's Guide To The Galaxy music...

HYPNOFISH!!!

Twelve episodes into the Fantasticast and Andrew and Stephen find themselves confronted by the titanic not-quite-a-team-up of Namor and Puppet Master, followed by the worst forger (and moustache) in the world, The Painter. Discover the joys of the Hypnofish, marvel at Alicia Masters' uncanny ability to resolve the plot in time for the end of the book, and cower before the menace of Wilhelm van Vile.

The Fantasticast Episode 9

Patriotic Pedestrians Proceeding from Planet Poppup Prefer Poorly Produced Podcasts

I don't consider our show poorly produced, but we have been experiencing sound quality issues that do affect this episode. Sorry!

This week Steve and Andy are on their own, and they're taking a look at two slices of Silver age scrumptiousness. First up is Fantastic Four #11, featuring the first appearances of Willie Lumpkin and The Impossible Man. And then, to finish off, there's Strange Tales #106, featuring the second appearance of most of the Wizard.

Don! Don! Don! Don-Don-Don! Don-Don-Don!

(It's the Imperial March)

Welcome to Episode Eight of the Fantasticast! I can't believe we've been doing this for more hours than there are of television and film set in the world of Firefly! This episode sees veteran podcaster Donovan Morgan Grant (Amazing Spider-Man Classics, The Next Dimension: A Dragonball Z Podcast) jump aboard for two hours of mind-swapping madness and sticky goodness as we take a look at Fantastic Four #10 and Strange Tales #104. We find out how Doctor Doom survive the ravages of space, watch the team read some mail, and meet Paste Pot Pete and give him every ounce of respect that his first appearance deserves.

The Fantasticast Episode 7: Fantastic Four #9 & Strange Tales #103

The Fantasticast Episode 7

S(&)M Studios!

Stephen and Andrew are (mostly) going it alone this week, taking a look at Fantastic Four #9, which gave us the first appearance of the classic Silver Age Marvel trope, the use of a film shoot to cover the plans of a nefarious ne'er-do-well! There's fun galore as the signal flare is used and abused, as Stan and Jack cram in a bunch of celebrity cameos, as the Human Torch faces off against a fire-proof tribe, and Ben and Namor get down to business in one of the best fight scenes yet in the book. And then there's Strange Tales #103, which has some mucking around in the 5th dimension (not that one...) in a fairly forgettable story that has already slipped my memory.

We're also briefly joined by Jon M. Wilson and J. David Weter of The New 52 Adventures of Superman to establish just what the heck went on with the last episode...

The Fantasticast Episode 6: Fantastic Four #8 & Strange Tales #102

The Fantasticast Episode 6

Like A Puppet On A String

This week, Andrew and Steve are joined by veteran podcaster Joshua Lapin-Bertone, formerly of Amazing Spider-Man Classics and currently of Clone Saga Chronicles, The Spider-Man Crawlspace and Bertone Beatle Bonanza, amongst others. Josh is a veteran of the Silver Age, despite not having lived through it, and was also the voice for Namor in our amazing trailer, so we couldn't wait to get him onto the show.

This time, we cover the first appearance of Philip and Alicia Masters in Fantastic Four #8, whilst the Wizard and his alarming choice of facial hair pop up to render a future retcon null and void in Strange Tales #102.

The Fantasticast Episode 5

The Strangest Tales Of All

Hello and welcome to the fifth episode of the Fantasticast. Andrew Leyland and Steve Lacey are your guides today as we journey through Fantastic Four #7 and Strange Tales #101, the first issue of that title to feature the (almost) solo adventures of The Human Torch. Along the way, we nearly redo a gag from a previous episode, get highly distracted by anything shiny nearby, and, almost by accident, manage to provide some commentary on the issues!
